Tonight I photographed 19 year old Ryan Phillips for a new model test shoot. He did a fantastic job. Male models seem much harder to find than female models. Ryan had never modeled before but I was amazed at how comfortable he was in front of the camera. Most guys are nervous and don’t know what to do, but Ryan had some good ideas and he seemed very comfortable and took direction will. He had the look that was just classic black and white. I shot his sister Baillie a few days ago and set up my lighting TOTALLY different for Ryan than for his sister. I like to light men much harder than women. It helps define their features much better. Whereas for Baillie I used gridded softboxes, for Ryan I used one strip softbox to the rear and three gridded spots. The grid controls light spill and the spots give a much harder edge to the light.
I certainly plan to use Ryan in future projects. He has a great look!
