In 2013 I pitched a story idea to Oklahoma Today – ride the Trans-America trail across Oklahoma. My friend and writer Bill Dragoo joined in with me on the pitch and it was approved. We originally planned the trip for fall 2013 but my father got sick so we postponed until spring 2014. We had planned to ride motorcycles but my wife broke her write right before the trip so we decided to take trucks instead – Bill and Susan Dragoo in their Toyota Tacoma and me in my Toyota FJ Cruiser. Kay didn’t feel her wrist could take the punishment of four days driving dirt roads so I ended up going solo and using Bill and Susan as my photo subjects. The story ran over several pages in Oklahoma Today.
We spent 4 days driving dirt roads in Oklahoma and stopped to chat with many people along the way. A lot of pictures didn’t make the story because of limited space. Below is a slide show of outtakes from the story.
