I traveled to Garden City, Kansas over the summer to photograph a story about water conservation efforts in the Ogallala Aquifer that covers western Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. This huge aquifer is slowly being used up by the massive irrigation efforts by farmers in these western states, trying to feed the growing populations of the USA and world. Dwayne Roth, a farmer in Finney County, KS, is working with the Kansas Water Office and Kansas State University to find ways to conserve water while still growing critical crops. He has developed a water technology farm using advanced technology to track irrigation methods, soil moisture levels and crop growth. Soil meters allow Roth to analyze each section of his pivot irrigation system and determine how effect the watering efforts are for each type of irrigation method.
