I just got back from a nine mile run – my second this week – and thought “that was pretty easy”. It reminded me of my first long 8 mile run about 6 months ago. I dropped Kay’s Chrysler Crossfire convertible off at Bob Howard Dodge for some service and ran home 8 miles. Well, I ran most of it and walked part of it. When I got done my legs were really hurting and I could barely walk for a day. That was six months ago. Now if feels fantastic to be able to knock out a 9 mile run without much fanfare and feel great afterwards. In the past 5 days I have ran 26 miles and my legs feel fantastic – especially considering I have also bicycled over 70 miles in the same time span. I am still not all that fast, usually averaging about an 11-12 minute mile, but I just hang in there and keep running and the miles pile up.
When I first started I HATED running. Now I actually enjoy running. What a change. It is not something I get up in the morning and think “I would love to go run”. No, I say that about riding my bicycle. I would much prefer just to ride my bicycle all the time rather than running or swimming, but I also want a varied workout, I want to work on different muscle groups, and I like variety in my workouts. Instead it is more along the lines “I haven’t run in a day or so, I think I will run today” and I enjoy it when I do run. I am really glad my legs, knees, ankles and feet are holding up. I had just a bit of soreness in my right knee while running today but nothing major and it felt fine afterwards.
Last week I did a 14 mile run. I am hoping to do a 20 mile run soon. Stay tuned!
