This morning I decided to do a run around Lake Hefner in OKC for a change of pace. This is normally a 10 mile run, but this morning the weather was especially pleasant, especially for the last day of July. About 7 miles into my run my legs were feeling great, nothing was hurting, and I was in a nice running rhythm. I thought about doing two laps of Hefner – 20 miles – but knew that although I felt my body would hold up just fine, I just didn’t have the time for a 20 mile run and still get work done today. So instead I decided to continue on along the Hefner dam and log a half marathon instead. I was able to hold a nice steady pace for my entire run and in fact, mile 13 was my third-fastest mile split of the run.
My goal right now is for my body to acclimate to long runs. I want to be in marathon shape at all times – in good enough shape to run a marathon at a moment’s notice, without any additional training, and not wipe myself out the next day. I am getting pretty close to that type of conditioning right now. I felt great after today’s run. My legs and especially hips were just a bit sore but I was able to work them out during the day and still did a full day’s work at home.
