Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon 2019

Picking up my metal and shirt after the run was awesome.

Wow, that was 26.2 miles of fun. Challenging, difficult, time-consuming, painful? Yes.

But in the end, I had a GREAT time. I was SO happy to be alive and able to physically able to run the OKC Marathon. 26.2 miles. I was a bit slower than last year, but hey, I had open heart surgery just six months ago!

Nearly 25,000 people lined up in downtown OKC for the 2019 OKC Marathon.
Kay and I dropped my truck off at Emily’s house, which is inside the marathon perimeter, then rode our bicycles with Emily to the start of the race. It was a bit chilly to start the race.
I started the race with Emily and Kay then after about 4 miles we separated and I ran a bit faster so that I could get done before the 20-mile cutoff.
The race officially started at 6:30 but it took 25 minutes for us to get to the start line because of the huge crowds and wave starts.
Met one of my photographer friends at the 17-mile Lake Hefner turn point.
I couldn’t eat a lot after the race but did manage to get down a slice of pizza about an hour later.
The next Monday after the race I went to OKC Heart Hospital to thank the people who helped me recovery from open heart surgery.
After OK Heart Hospital, I went to the OKC Indian Clinic to thank Dr. Kong, my primary care physician, and his nurse. Dr. Kong has been great at keeping me healthy.
The marathon route took us past the OK State Capitol.
The participation of the spectators and neighborhoods is really what makes the OKC Marathon special to me as well as remembering the people who lost their lives in the bombing.
Lots of funny signs along the route.
I was still feeling pretty good and had a nice pace at Mile 17, even though my longest run since heart surgery had been a couple of half-marathons.
It was fun seeing my family at the end of my run.
Yea baby! 26.2 miles of running. The second time I have done this and hopefully not the last.
