In the studio with Micha Young

I have done several sessions with Micha Young, a mom and wife from Enid, Oklahoma. She is always great to work with and this time in 2015 I invited her into my studio for a photo session both in color and black and white. Most of the images I shot with my Nikon D800, but we also got a few photos with my Toyo View VX-125 4″x5″ film camera.

I like shooting with strong lighting and Micha has the face structure to easily handle strong light. I think the light adds to the mystery and aura of the photo and was intentional from the start.
My original plan was to shoot mostly in black and white, hence the strong lighting and contrast. Micha’s perfect features holds up well to this hard lighting style. The only retouching on this photo was to turn it from color to black and white in Adobe Lightroom, which was my original plan anyway. Who needs skin filters when you have awesome skin?
So many great shots from this session it is hard to pick a favorite. Micha always rocks our photo sessions.
The color photos were so darn good, especially with the red lipstick and reddish hair, I decided to share a few of these color version. Once again, no Photoshop or retouching to speak of for this photo. Yes, her skin does look that perfect.
Back to black and white photos, and this time we changed the hat for a slightly different look.
I switched cameras and shot this on my Toyo View VX-125 large-format film camera. I faked the film border since my scanner at the time wouldn’t scan the border, but the scan is from a big 4″x5″ sheet of Kodak TMAX-100 film.
Another sheet of film from my Toyo View VX-125 film camera. I have to shoot this camera on a tripod so Micha is limited in the movements she can do. I really like the film look on this. It is less than perfect, just like film.
So many great pictures from this session.
After our studio session, we stepped outside for a few natural light shots.
Sunlight only on this outdoor shot.
A bit different look outdoors.
