Morning walk with Kay at the OKC Fairgrounds cow show

Kay and I usually walk Mitch Park in Edmond a lot of mornings. This morning we decided instead to walk the OKC Fairgrounds. Luckily there was a really big cow show going on.

Kay and I were tired of walking on our home treadmill or riding my indoor bicycle, and it was a chilly 32 degrees outside, so we decided to do our morning walk at the OKC Fairgrounds. Like most winter days, they were having a livestock event that made our morning walk much more interesting. We wandered the show, got in about two miles of walking, and saw some interesting sites.

Last time I was in this arena, it was for a horse show. This time it was cows.

We also learned a bit about judging cattle. As the judge would talk about the winners, he would claim some heifers were “necky”, some were “flashy”, some of them didn’t have big enough butts, and my favorite, one heifer was “cow’ee” whatever that means. I am not sure how one cow could bre more “cow” than the other cow, but I guess that is a thing.

The OKC Fairgrounds show barns were chock-full of cattle from all across the United States, waiting to be shown at a two-week cow show.
When we first walked into the show, we noticed people were hard at work grooming the cows with blow driers and hair spray.
This cow must not have been all that special, or the owner was on a budget, because she only had one person grooming her.
I was surprised to see a bunch of generators outside the show barn all making a loud racket. Doesn’t the barn have enough power? I guess not.
This bull was substantially bigger than these heifers. Maybe this was his harem?
People from all over came to this livestock show. These cows are from Idaho.
One of the areanas was dedicated to a livestock equipment trade show.
You could buy cow feeders, watering troughs, or whatever you might need for your cows.
Want to sample some cow feed? Each bucket had a different mixture of grain.
Cows were lined up at the entrance to Jim Norick Arena at the fairgrounds.
There were two arenas going at once. People would walk their cows into the arena, make one lap, then line up for the judges to pick the winner.
The top four cows looked all the same to Kay and I. Little did we know that some cows were more “cow-ee” than other cows.
We saw a lot of kids showing the cows. What a great think for a kid to be doing – learning responsibility.
Jim Norick Arena looks pretty much the same as it did when I was a kid.
Can anyone decipher the ear tags? Looks like a lot of numbers that don’t mean anything to me.
At least these cows had names, not just a number.
This scene of kids playing around cows was quite common. Farming and ranching is a family occupation.
This was a side arena where they were parading cows through one at a time, I am assuming for some type of auction.
It was pretty cold and blustery outside, but inside was fairly nice. Still needed a jacket but no wind and a bit warmer temperatures.
This ranch is tunneling the “Tulsa King” show. We didn’t see Sylvester Stallone wandering around anywhere.

This looked like a NASCAR pit stop as they prepped this cow for competition.
I just liked the light streaming through the windows into the barns at the fairgrounds.
It seems like big butts are popular on cows.
Kay took time to peruse some cowhides.
I just wanted to take a picture of this colorful pile of ropes.
If you wanted your home to look like a country home, this was the place to buy decor.
Yellowstone fans will get this sign.
Getting a nice shine on an expensive pair of cowboy boots.
Anohter NASCAR cow pit crew. DId you know they use hair spray and spray adhesive to fluff up the cow’s hair?
It seemed aweful cold and windy to be getting a shower outdoors today. I was at the horse show a few weeks ago in the same place, and all the horses got their showers indoors. I guess horses have more privilages than cows.
