Day four of my road trip from Edmond, Oklahoma, to Alaska was, without a doubt, the best day yet. As I shared in my latest video (watch it below), I spent most of the day exploring the dirt and gravel roads of eastern Montana, immersing myself in the heart of the countryside. From stunning green landscapes and blooming wildflowers to ranches filled with impressive working horses, this day was a celebration of the remote, unspoiled beauty that makes backroad travel so special. Here’s how it unfolded and why these off-the-beaten-path adventures mean so much to me.
Embracing the Backroads of Eastern Montana
After waking up at an RV park in southeast Montana, I set out with extra time on my hands and a craving to venture off the pavement. Eastern Montana delivered in spades, with its network of dirt and gravel roads winding through rolling hills and wide-open plains. The scenery was spectacular—lush green fields, dotted with wildflowers in full bloom, sparkled under a perfect summer sky. Streams and small rivers added a touch of sparkle, and the cool, comfortable temperatures made it an ideal day for exploration. I drove slowly, soaking in the sights and stopping often to capture the beauty with my camera, from hayfields swaying in the breeze to distant ranches nestled against the horizon.

For me, exploring gravel roads isn’t just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about connecting with the soul of a place. These backroads take you past working ranches, small homesteads, and quiet corners where life moves at a slower pace. You see the real countryside and feel the rhythm of the people who live there, far from the bustle of big cities. This kind of travel makes me feel at home, grounded in the vastness of the landscape. It’s something I’ve done for years, whether on my dual sport motorcycle, in my Jeep Wrangler, or now in my 2015 Chevy Silverado. Long before terms like “adventure rider” or “overlanding” became trendy, I was out there chasing these remote roads, seeking the stories and beauty hidden in places most travelers speed past.

A Love for Horses and Ranch Life
One of the highlights of the day was seeing the incredible working horses of eastern Montana. Growing up, I spent countless hours on horseback, riding in rodeos and training broncs, and I developed a deep appreciation for good cow horses. The horses I saw today were the real deal—strong, agile, and bred for the demands of ranch life. Watching them move across the fields, I felt a wave of nostalgia for my younger days, when a good horse was a partner in every adventure. These Montana horses, with their sturdy builds and sharp instincts, are a testament to the region’s ranching heritage, and I couldn’t help but stop to photograph them against the backdrop of the rolling plains.

An Unexpected Bee Adventure
Eastern Montana’s countryside had another surprise in store: beehives scattered across the landscape. I noticed them everywhere, likely commercial hives moved around to pollinate crops, a common practice in agricultural areas. Curiosity got the better of me, and I sent my drone up for a closer look at one hive near my campsite. Big mistake! The bees were not thrilled with my buzzing intruder and launched a full-on attack. A swarm chased the drone back to my Silverado, where I had to land it on the hood while safely inside the truck. I even drove a short distance to shake off the angry bees before retrieving the drone. It was a hilarious moment that reminded me to respect the locals—even the six-legged ones! The photos and video I captured, though, were worth the chaos, showcasing the vibrant life of Montana’s countryside.

Why This Trip Is About the Journey
My trip to Alaska was never just about reaching Anchorage—it was about the journey itself. Driving to Alaska gave me the chance to explore the countryside between my home in Edmond and the far north, to linger in places like eastern Montana that most people might overlook. The gravel roads, the ranches, the horses, and even the cranky bees are what make this adventure so fulfilling. I love capturing these moments with my camera, sharing the beauty of these everyday places with others who might not have the chance to visit. My photos are an invitation to see the world through a traveler’s eyes, to find wonder in the quiet corners of the country.

Settling In for the Night
As the day wound down, I decided to head to Billings, Montana, and checked into a low-budget motel for the evening. With some work to catch up on, I relied on the hotel’s internet that night and the next morning to connect back to my real life and get some serious tasks done for Twotrees Technologies. The great thing about my career in Information Technology is the flexibility to work from just about anywhere with an internet connection—whether it’s a cheap hotel room in Billings or a remote campsite with my Starlink Mini. This freedom lets me balance adventure and responsibility, making trips like this possible. After a day of exploring Montana’s backroads, the motel was a practical choice, giving me a comfortable base to recharge for the next leg of the journey.
This trip is a reminder that adventure doesn’t always mean exotic destinations—it’s about finding beauty in the places you least expect. So grab your camera, hit a gravel road, and see what stories you uncover! Have you explored a hidden gem on a backroad? Share your favorite spots in the comments—I’d love to hear about them!
