As I prepare to hit the road from Edmond, Oklahoma, to Alaska in my 2015 Chevy Silverado, one of my top priorities is staying connected. This isn’t just a vacation—it’s a month-long journey, and I need to keep up with work at Twotrees Technologies while enjoying the wild beauty of the Alcan Highway and Alaska. My wife, Kay, will be joining me after flying into Calgary, and she’ll need to stay on top of her real estate business too. Enter the Starlink Mini—a game-changer for staying connected in the middle of nowhere. Here’s how we’re making it work and how I set up the Starlink Mini on my truck for this epic adventure.
Work Hard, Travel Smart: Our Flexible Work-Life Balance
At Twotrees Technologies, I’m lucky to work for an incredible company that values flexibility. They’ve always supported my ability to work remotely, whether I’m at home or on the road. Kay and I have built our careers around this balance—working in the mornings to stay on top of emails, calls, and projects, then diving into vacation mode in the afternoons to explore and unwind. Whether it’s me handling tech tasks or Kay managing real estate deals, we’ve perfected the art of blending work and travel. This Alaska trip is no exception, and reliable internet is the key to making it happen.
Why Starlink Mini is a Game-Changer
The Starlink Mini is nothing short of revolutionary for travelers like us. It delivers high-speed internet connectivity, even in remote areas, which is critical for our journey through the sparsely populated stretches of Canada and Alaska. With Starlink, I can check emails, join meetings, and tackle work tasks from our campsite. Kay can make calls, conduct video conferences for her real estate clients, and even close deals—all while I’m behind the wheel or we’re parked at a scenic overlook. This level of connectivity means we don’t have to choose between work and adventure—we can have both.
Setting Up the Starlink Mini on the Silverado
To make this work, I needed a reliable way to mount and power the Starlink Mini on my 2015 Chevy Silverado. I wanted a setup that was secure, weatherproof, and easy to use, especially since we’ll be camping in the truck bed and moving through varied terrain. Here’s how I got it done, based on my recent test run (check out the video here for a closer look!).

I purchased a Starlink Mini along with a magnetic mount designed to sit securely on the roof of my truck. The magnet is incredibly strong, gripping the Silverado’s roof like it’s glued on, which gives me confidence it’ll stay put even on bumpy Alcan Highway stretches. To power the Starlink, I ran the cable through the truck’s door and plugged it into the cigarette lighter for 12-volt power. It’s a simple setup that provides plenty of juice to keep the Starlink running without a hitch.

Just to be extra cautious, I added a backup plan. I got a weatherproof case for the Starlink Mini to protect it from rain, dust, and whatever else the road throws at us. I also rigged up a tether system, tying the Starlink to my truck’s cross-bed aluminum toolbox (which I installed for camping, as I shared in my last post). If, for some reason, the magnetic mount fails (though I doubt it will, given how strong it is), the tether will keep the Starlink from flying off. It’s secured to the toolbox handle, so I’d hear a racket if it came loose, and I will for sure notice it when the toolbox lid flips up when the handle is jerked open. This setup is rock-solid, and I’m confident it’ll keep us connected throughout the trip.

Ready for the Journey
With the Starlink Mini mounted and ready, I’m thrilled about the freedom it gives us. Whether we’re camped under the stars in British Columbia or parked near a glacier in Alaska, we’ll have the internet we need to stay productive in the mornings and soak in the adventure in the afternoons. The Silverado is shaping up to be the ultimate road trip rig—part mobile office, part cozy campsite, and all ready for the road ahead.
Stay tuned for more updates as we finalize our preparations and hit the road for Alaska! Have you used Starlink for travel or remote work? Share your tips in the comments—I’d love to hear how you stay connected on the go!
