Hey folks, it’s James Pratt and I just had to sit down and share a few thoughts about one of my absolute favorite traditions here in Edmond, Oklahoma—the Liberty Fest Parade. This year, on July 4, 2026 we’re not just marking Independence Day; we’re celebrating a whopping 250 years of this great nation. What a time to be alive and waving the flag in downtown Edmond!

My wife Kay and I have called Edmond home for over 30 years now, and let me tell you, it’s been one heck of a fun ride. We’ve watched this community grow while holding tight to that small-town spirit that makes it so special. Every summer, the Liberty Fest Parade has been a highlight for our family. Back in the day, we’d bundle up our own kids and stake out a prime spot along the street. Now? We’re doing it all over again with the grandkids in tow. There’s nothing quite like seeing their eyes light up at the floats, marching bands, and that pure patriotic energy filling the air.

The Edmond Liberty Fest Parade has earned its stripes as one of the top Fourth of July parades in America—and for good reason. It’s got that perfect mix of hometown charm, big-time excitement, and genuine community pride. We love grabbing our lawn chairs, settling in early on the curb, and soaking it all in as friends, neighbors, and folks from all over come together to celebrate the founding of this country. It’s not just a parade; it’s a reminder of what makes living here so rewarding.
A little history nugget for you: Edmond got its start back in 1889 during the Oklahoma Land Run. It began as a simple railroad stop on the Santa Fe line at what they called Mile Marker 103, named after a freight agent. From those pioneer days, it’s grown into the vibrant city we know today—full of history, heart, and plenty of good times. Being part of that story feels pretty special.

One of my favorite parts? Snapping photos of all the interesting and wonderful people who show up. You’ve got veterans marching with pride, families decked out in red, white, and blue, kids on shoulders cheering, and floats that capture the creativity and spirit of our town. I could spend the whole morning behind the lens, capturing those smiles and moments that make the day unforgettable. This parade and the whole weekend celebration always rank right up there as one of the annual highlights of living in Edmond. It’s pure joy, plain and simple.

This year, I was especially pumped to see the P-51 Mustang “Miss America” fly over the parade. What a thrill! That beautiful bird has a special place in my heart because I used to keep my office and planes out at Wiley Post Airport. The owner, Dr. Brent Hisey, had her hangared there too. Man, the sound of that big Merlin V-12 engine firing up was unmistakable. Whenever we’d hear it, everyone would drop what they were doing and run outside to watch her taxi and take off. Pure goosebumps every single time. Hearing that roar overhead during the parade brought back a flood of great memories.

If you’re in the area or just passing through, do yourself a favor and check out Liberty Fest next time. It’s family-friendly, full of fun, and a fantastic way to honor our country’s birthday. Kay and I are already looking forward to next year—more chairs, more grandkids, more pictures, and more of that Edmond magic.
