4x5x365 – Image 308

My long-time good friend and fellow photographer Robert Trawick sat for this picture with me at a local coffee shop in Bethany. Robert has been sick with cancer and he was finally feeling good enough to meet for coffee. He was excited when I brought my Toyo VX-125 camera for us to play with. I set it up and we took pictures of each other using my Nikkor 300mm F5.8 lens wide open at F5.8. I tilted the front standard forward so that the plane of focus was at a 45 degree angle to the film plane, creating a one inch depth of field that passed through Robert’s eyes, leaving his chin and hair out of focus. This is an effect I have used often for portraits.
