4x5x365 – Image 183

October 31, 2021 by James Pratt Leave a Comment

As we were exploring the dirt roads of Arizona, I took the time to grab this picture of my wife and our 2-month old Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with my Toyo view camera. I snapped hundreds of pictures with my Nikon Z6, but still wanted to practice and play with my Toyo VX-125 on our trip. […]

While in my son’s backyard shooting hoops and playing with the kids, I set up my Toyo View VX-125 film camera to take a photo of my son and wife. While I was loading the film, my son’s daughter, and our granddaughter, ran over to be in the picture. We liked how this one turned […]

While we were at my son’s house in Bethany, I set up my Toyo VX-125 to take a picture of me and Kay. My grandsons were playing with my digital camera while I set up my Toyo and focused on Kay. Once I had everything set and the film loaded, I had Charlie snap the […]

My favorite 35mm portrait lens is my Nikon 85mm 1.4, and I was looking for a 4×5 portrait lens that resembled that field of view. I have used my Nikkor-W 210mm F5.6 extensively as a portrait lens on my Toyo View VX-125, but to get a head and shoulders shot, I have to put the […]

Welding tomato plants?

August 9, 2017 by James Pratt Leave a Comment

I used my Lincoln Electric Square Wave TIG-200 welder in stick welding mode to build a rebar structure to hold our tomato plants in place after strong Oklahoma winds knocked them down.

The past week was quite windy here in Edmond, and Kay’s fast-growing tomato plants didn’t fare so well. Top-heavy already, the wind blew them over and broke a few plants. I had put a few rebar stakes in the ground earlier this spring but they weren’t enough to hold the plants in place against these […]

Oklahoma Living Magazine cover February 2022

Once again I was able to photograph a cover for Oklahoma Living Magazine. I always like photographing their legislative issue, since I usually get to take portraits of leaders in our state government. It is always a challenge to do something new and different. This time the story was about civility in our state government, […]

Oklahoma Living Magazine cover July 2021

My most recent cover image turned into one of my favorite OK Living covers in recent years. I got this assignment to photograph off-road parks across Oklahoma. Heck yea, that is right down my wheelhouse!! Right after I got the assignment I happened to be in Disney on a dual sport motorcycle ride, but a […]

Oklahoma Living Magazine cover May 2021

I had the opportunity to photograph the May 2021 cover of Oklahoma Living Magazine. The subject was “careers in the electric coop industry” and I was to photograph several people working at a variety of jobs within the coop industry. I sent to Seminole and Ada, Oklahoma for these photos.

Oklahoma Living August 2020

I forgot to post this cover photo that I did for Oklahoma Living last year during the pandemic. I went to Stillwater to photograph a CareerTech student on a hot July morning. We were able to stay “socially distanced” while I did the shoot.

OK Living Cover May 2020

Before the COVID-19 pandemic I toted my white background and lighting gear to Central Electric Cooperative in Stillwater for a cover shoot for Oklahoma Living Magazine. These usually require a fair amount of work, since I have to take an 11′ roll of white paper with me, plus all the gear to hold the paper […]

Oklahoma Living April 2020 Cover and Feature Story

I always love assignments from Oklahoma Living Magazine. Most are centered around people, and I love photographing people. In this case, I was assigned to photograph a story about Gene Rowe, a farmer in southwest Oklahoma. The story was written by Adam Calaway, one of my favorite writers, so I knew it was going to […]

Oklahoma Living Magazine September 2019 Cover

I had fun photographing this cover story for Oklahoma Living Magazine, one of my favorite clients. I took this picture at the beautiful Chickasaw Nation Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma on a really hot summer day. I had to be careful to keep my models from sweating. It was toasty hot, about 98 degrees outside. […]

Goodnight Farms in Chattanooga Oklahoma

In 2017 I photographed a story about Cody Goodnight, co-owner of Goodnight Farms southwest Oklahoma. The assignment was for Top Producer Magazine, a regular client I work for in the agriculture industry. I photographed Cody and his father, fiancé and employees on their farm in early spring as they were getting ready for the wheat […]

Volunteer Firefighters for Oklahoma Living

I always love photographing real people doing real things. What could be more fun than photographing volunteer firemen? I got that opportunity recently for Oklahoma Living Magazine. My assignment was to photograph firemen from the Coyle and Woodcrest fire departments in Oklahoma. I had the idea to do a split-shot photo that showed both the […]

Rising from the Ashes – for Kansas Agriculture Magazine

During the summer 2017 I took a trip to western Kansas for a long-time client and photographed a couple of stories in the area. For one story I stopped in Clark County and photographed the Ashland Veterinarian Clinic for a story about how the clinic helped local farmers during and after a huge spring prairie […]
